Today I was headed to Boise,Idaho with Sweet-Marie and Rumrunner1 and all had to get up at 2:00 AM to board our 5:00 AM flight from Bellingham, Washington to Boise, Idaho.
Upon waking up I checked a new publication for Boise as there was word that about 550 caches would be published. As I checked about 200 caches had been published, I thought the locals would have those found and all FTF’s in hand by the time we would get boots on the ground.
Upon arriving in Boise I had to phone Tim of The Idaho league of Cachers and talk to him about cache maintenance on the “Jet” series. We had agreed to do this prior to leaving and had to arrange to pick up supplies to do this.
I called Tim from the airport in Boise and found that cachers from Kentucky had carried out almost all maintenance the day before. Tim asked had I seen the release and I said yes I had seen the release at 1:00 AM and he said well there were 3 more releases with the last one 25 minutes ago.
Now we were onto plan B which was leave the “Jet” till tomorrow and head to the “Owyhee Uplands Byway” caches now. A quick pocket query and load all GPS’s we were off but only to Denny’s to fuel up first.
Leaving Denny’s we were about an hour of driving and picking up supplies. Arriving at Byway number 002 we opened the cache to find that we were possibly the First to Find (FTF). We had to find a few more caches to be sure. The reason is on Power trails one place a new cache with new log and then carries the cache to the new hide and signs the log along the way.
After about the 5th cache we were certain now we were on a record FTF find.
The Byway series can best be summed up this way “The Good” “The Bad” “The Ugly”. This isn’t like any power trail I have done. The caches are in all sizes and shaped and they are well hidden(at least they were at the time we fund them) and lets say you will feel some pain getting them. You will get prickles in your arms and hands and scratches on your legs.
For the day we managed to have 103 FTF’s setting a new personnel record for FTF’s.
The first 80 or so caches are on paved road before it switches to gravel.
We quit about 2 hours before sunset because Sweet-Marie is recovering from Cancer and didn’t want to push her hard. We had had our fill of caches for the day and based on getting up at 2:00 AM we were done.
