Kauai is known as the Garden Island but also known as the Chicken Island and for good reason.
It doesn’t matter where you go on this island you will likely find chickens walking free.
The story is 2 hurricanes in 1982 and 1992 ripped through the island freeing all the chickens kept in cages. If you talk to a local Hawaiian they say Cock Fighting was part of the culture of the people so most chickens were on the island for this sole purpose.
The hurricane blows by and frees the chickens and you soon have out of control chickens running the island. I can say this from personal experience these chickens are not afraid and will go after you just like the Canadian Cobra Chicken (Canada Goose for those non Canadians) will back home.
There was a Ballot Measure for Kauai Hawaii to cull the chickens but it was defeated in 2024. The Chickens are considered now part of the culture of Kauai.
Having been here a few times I didn’t see the point to go back to the Fern Grotto or rent a car to head up to the north side or the rainy side of the island.
We headed into the small mall near the ship then walked over to the Marriott Vacation Club to see the Koi pound and the original Dug Out Canoe.
There was the usual stop at the ABC store to see what they had. All I managed to buy was 2 Coke Zero and then back to the ship.
There were no Geocaches in this port left for me to do. There is one multi that has the final a long ways away to a lighthouse.
So all in all we did not do much here. Unless you rent a car here it is tough to get around.
